Location: Ronde, Denmark
Project name: Volunteer at Kalø Økologiske Landbrugsskole – Farming
Hosting organisation: Viden Djurs
Sending organisation: “Common Sense” Youth Organisation
At Kalø Økologiske Landbrugsskole, volunteers will participate in a year-round program tailored to the agricultural season. Activities include working with livestock (pigs, sheep, hens, cows), cultivating plants, performing fieldwork, managing agricultural machinery, and preparing vegetables for the farm shop. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in establishing, maintaining, and harvesting crops, as well as caring for animals, processing, and selling meat. The school integrates its own crops and meat into the organic meals served in the kitchen. Volunteers will also contribute to preparing produce for the farm shop, which offers a wide variety of fresh, seasonal vegetables.
This opportunity allows volunteers to learn about domestic animal care, the annual cycles of plants and animals, greenhouse and outdoor farming, and organic and sustainable cultivation methods. As the nature of farming sometimes requires work outside regular hours, volunteers should be prepared for occasional tasks at unconventional times, with compensatory time off provided.
Volunteers will live at the school alongside students and are encouraged to become active members of the vibrant social community. The school offers a variety of student-driven activities and facilities, including a choir, fitness room, table tennis, pool, and football. Surrounded by beautiful nature, volunteers can enjoy activities like ocean swimming (though it might be chilly), walking or biking in the nearby forest. Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, is also within easy reach, providing plenty of cultural and leisure options.
