The project:

Youth work plays a pivotal role in fostering inclusion, serving as a powerful catalyst for social cohesion and personal development among young people from diverse backgrounds. This transformative process must first permeate youth work itself, prompting a reflective reassessment of the status quo to ensure that the practice of inclusion begins within the very fabric of youth work organisations and methodologies.

Within this perspective, the ETS Competence Model for Youth Workers becomes instrumental. Rather than superficially addressing the whole ETS competence model, the partnership identified the competence area of “Communicating meaningfully” as the entry point for triggering the needed deep and transversal reflection on inclusion.

Specific Objectives:

  • To enhance Youth Worker Competences: Equipping youth workers with advanced skills, attitudes, and knowledge in “Communicating Meaningfully”, ensuring they can engage effectively with young people and their diverse needs. This includes active listening, empathy, dealing with emotions, and leveraging a variety of communication tools, including digital platforms, to reach out to and include all young people.
  • To Promote Inclusivity through Communication: Creating an inclusive environment where youth workers, irrespective of their abilities or educational levels, feel valued and heard. This involves developing methodologies and communication strategies that acknowledge and respect the unique identities and experiences of all participants.
  • To Empower through Participation: providing a participatory approach for youth workers to encourage young people to express their feelings, emotions, and opinions, contributing to a collective effort to address and challenge societal disparities and biases.
  • To Address and Counteract Marginalisation: Utilise the project as a platform to highlight and mitigate the challenges faced by individuals with diverse abilities and lower educational attainment, aiming to improve their access to opportunities and societal participation.
  • To Build Solidarity and Challenge Divisive Mindsets: Encourage a culture of solidarity among youth and among practitioners, challenging the ‘them and us’ mindset. This includes critical reflection on information sources and promoting a unified approach to diversity and inclusion.
