Working timetable and tasks

Mon 25.8. Arriving to Vasatokka Youth Center

Tue 26.8. On arrival training: getting to know the place, each other & local lifestyle

Wed-Sat 27.-30.8. Working days: preparations for an outdoor event (Finnish Nature Day on Sat 30.8.)

Sun-Mon 31.8-1.9 days off; Tue-Sat 2.-6.9. Working days: preparations for Wild Vasatokka Race (Fri-Sat 5.-6.9.)

Sun 7.9. day off; Mon 8.9. Cleaning up the race; Tue 9.9. Evaluation, feedback & closing the project

Wed 9.9. Departure from Vasatokka Youth Center

Last Saturday of August (30.8.) is Finnish Nature Day, and it’s also a national “Sleep Outdoors Day”. There are events in

the whole Finland, and volunteers will work and help with local event setups. Work consists e.g. organising outdoor

activities for families. There is also possibility to sleep the night in a hammock, and explore the beautiful northern

surroundings. Equipment and introduction for sleeping outdoors will be provided.

On the second week volunteers help organizing outdoor adventure competition event for locals, called Wild Vasatokka

Race, which will be arranged for 4th time on Fri 5.9. for local secondary school youngsters and 6.9. for all competitors.

There can be also other additional work tasks.

Also, volunteers make social media content to Vasatokka’s some channels to make the project visible.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements: 

Accommodation

Volunteers will accommodate in hostel-like apartment with 3 bedrooms, shared

well-equipped kitchen, common living room area, shared showers, and toilets.

There will be 2-3 people per bedroom. From volunteer, it requires patience and

flexibility, as you will share apartment and room with other people during the whole

project. Sauna is in a different building and will be booked for certain evenings.

Bedlinen and towels are provided, and there is a laundry machine in the youth center.

Food

Whenever there are customer groups in the youth center that have meals included,

Volunteers will have ready meals in the center’s dining room. For those days when ready

meals are not served, volunteers cook by themselves in the apartment and shop

groceries from Inari village. Volunteers select couple of people from the team to

plan a shopping list and shop groceries for the whole group. Vasatokka provides

food money. The amount of food money depends on how many days there are

without ready meals.

Working hours

There will also be work during the weekend and free days during the week. Work days last

5-8 hours. At free time, it’s possible to rent Youth Center rental equipment, such as

canoes or mountain bikes, for a small price, 8€/day. Youth Center Game room, Sport

hall, and fire-huts are also available to use when they are not booked for customers.

Application conditions and requirements for volunteering:

Age 18-30

We are looking for volunteer who is…

• motivated to do all kinds of working tasks

• willing to work outside, even the conditions / weather can be challenging!

• responsible, and represents Vasatokka as staff member in front of local partners, kids and youngsters

• flexible, since there can be sudden changes to schedules due to weather

• always finishes the given tasks

• able to follow schedules, since it is important to be on time when there is a certain timetable

• has a survivor attitude towards the rural circumstances and location * 🙂

*Youth Center Vasatokka is located in the middle of nowhere, and surrounded by beautiful Lapland nature; big lake, forest,hills, and wilderness. Nearest village is 10km away, and there is no public transportation. At free time it’s possible to cycle to village. Late August the nights get dark again after midnight sun season, and there is possibility to see some auroras if you are lucky.

In Autumn, nature gets colorful and temperatures usually vary between +4 to +16°C. Night time it can go close to -0.

Working tasks include a lot of working outdoors, so volunteers need to pack warm, water and windproof clothes! 🙂 We have winter outdoor clothes to borrow in the Youth Center.

Privilege of participation is given to applicants who are:

• currently unemployed

• aren’t currently studying, or in training

• doesn’t necessarily have experience with ESC or Erasmus+

projects

• doesn’t necessarily have that much traveling experience

• can be considered a person with fewer opportunities

compared to average person in home country according to

ESC program guide*

* ”People with fewer opportunities means people who, for economic,

social, cultural, geographical or health reasons, a migrant background, or

for reasons such as disability and educational difficulties or for any other

reasons, including those that can give rise to discrimination under article

21 of the Charter of Fundamental rights of the European Union, face

obstacles that prevent them from having effective access to

opportunities under the programme. 

Volunteers have work instructor in Vasatokka who guides volunteers during the work

and introduces the work tasks. Also there is named mentor, who meets regularly with

volunteers during the period, and supports settling to the environment and project.
