The Vulkanschule is a primary and secondary school for pupils aged 6–14. It is a small school, with all together 47 pupils, situated in the countryside of Austria. We create a home-like atmosphere at school and inspire kids to learn with joy. We teach according to Montessori and Jena plan methods. Our principles are non-violent communication, respect for the development of the child, respect for each human-being. Central ideas of our pedagogy are a holistic, project-oriented, interdisciplinary, and mixed-age education. One volunteer is supporting the school staff mainly during the classes and afternoon activities. S/he helps preparing learning materials, assists during lunch time and breaks, develops his/her own project.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements:
The volunteer will live in a single room in a shared flat in Graz. A public transport ticket for the region of Styria is covered, as well as a half-price public transport ticket for whole of Austria. The volunteer will go from Graz to Feldbach to their school project. Volunteers will receive a food allowance of 330 EUR/month and pocket money of 210 EUR/month, in accordance with ESC programme guidelines. Travel and visa costs are also covered by the programme.
Training during the activity
A volunteer will participate at On-Arrival Training and Mid-term meeting, organized by the National Agency. He/she will be supported by a task-related and a personal mentor. A volunteer will be able to take part in a German course and use the Online Language Support Tool.
Participant profile

We look for a person, who is responsible and motivated to help students, as well as assisting teachers. Ideal candidates should be open-minded, active, and initiative-taking, capable of interacting with children of different ages and social backgrounds. An interest in alternative pedagogy and specific skills in arts, music, handicrafts, or sports is also desirable.
