Purpose of the project:
The tasks of the volunteer: Working in the shelter of stray cats and dogs in Sinop and assisting the vet and the staff with their work such as treatment, surgery, check-ups, keeping the record of the stages of the illnesses and feeding. The main challenge in the shelter is to fight against Distemper, Panleukopenia and Parvoviral Enteritis. Organising adopting, fund raising and food
collecting campaigns, going to rescue operations, city tours to feed the stray animals are the tasks of the volunteer outside the animal shelter. The day starts at 09:00 and ends at 15:30 in the shelter. Saturdays and Sundays are off. In the afternoon, the volunteer may work in a clinic where there is an X-Ray and the devices for tests in order to have more experience on diagnosis and treatment. Also the volunteer will be invited to watch some important surgeries of professors in university in Samsun. Some days the volunteer will be able to practice in the wild life
conservatory center to have some competences on wild animals such as bear, wolf, boar, wild horse, jackal, deer, fox, eagle, falcon, owl, bat, migrating birds, etc. which are sick, orphan or weak, unable to live without help. The activity is long term and we would like to host the volunteer for 10 months. Since they are vets, they will get more experienced on the following:
o The first aid on cats and dogs
o Cat and dog sterilization
o Diagnosis and treatment in internal medicine
o Traumatic surgery and amputation
o Post-op care
o Distemper, Panleukopenia and parvoviral enteritis
treatment
o Nursing the orphans
o Daily check-up of the patients and babies
o Cooking especially for the babies and the patients and feeding
o Adoption, raising awareness and funding campaigns
Volunteer will get more experience on surgery, diagnosis and treatment as well as taking care of the orphan babies. The volunteer will learn how to prepare the patient for operation, how to do the operations and things to do in post-op care of all animals: cats and dogs (mainly), wild animals (mentioned above – some days) and farm animals (visit to the farms with the vet). The volunteer will learn how to read the X-Ray and deduct over blood and urine test results and diagnose in the clinic.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements:
The volunteer will share a flat with the other volunteers but have his/her own room. There will be a free transportation to the animal shelter and wild life conservatory center and back home. They will get 4 Euros per day for pocket money (30 x 4 = 120 Euros per month) and 130 Euros for food per month. So altogether the volunteer will have 250 Euros per month. They will be reimbursed for their flight up to the maximum amount according to the distance of their home country in the ESC Program guide. The volunteer will not pay for their accommodation, wi-fi, electricity, water and gas but they have to use them neatly and economically in the flat. We kindly ask them not to forget the lights on and water running when leaving the house. Because the electricity is not cheap in Turkey, neither is the public water. The volunteer will live in a furnished flat with the other volunteers who are here for the other project activities. The volunteer will have her/his own room but share the kitchen and bathroom. There is furniture, wi-fi, hot water, kitchen tools, iron etc. There are bed sheets as well. But there is no hair dryer and towels. There might be sick animals that need intensive care under the responsibility of the
volunteer. We will provide a separate room for them. In case the volunteer wants to foster
or adopt an animal and take them in their room, they need to make sure that the furniture
stays safe.
